“This is not a real story but only dummy text so quit reading it you dummy and get back to work and just thank God this isn’t Latin because when we used to use the Latin it was actually a bunch of jokes about you and your wacky family, but only those of us who studied Latin were privy to the humor but now we use this cuz it gives more accurate word counts, but this is not a real story.” —This is what EW uses as its dummy text—none of that “lorem ipsum dolor” crap.

Has 'Glee' sold out?

Here’s a letter from a reader, which brings up some issues that are ripe for discussion:

When is somebody in the media going to come out and say it? Glee has sold out. What started as a smart, irreverent, comedy musical in the style of Moulin Rouge has devolved into High School Musical. Nothing this season has even come close to the chill-inducing Don’t Stop Believing or Somebody to Love. Passionate group numbers have been replaced with live action music videos lacking substance and heart. Instead of culling from classic songs from every era, they’re now bombarding us with redundant covers of current radio hits. Worse, we’re being forced to endure the stunning Lea Michele sounding like a chipmunk on an original song Hannah Montana would reject as lame. It’s clear creativity has taken a back seat so they can focus on iTunes sales, the Tween market, and celebrity guest stars who get more solos in single episodes than some cast members get all season. (Poor Jenna Ushkowitz.) If Glee wants to keep its adult fans, it needs to go back to re-inventing and re-introducing classic hits and showtunes to a new generation. Older fans will feel nostalgic, younger fans will get new music. Its win/win.

What do you think, Tumblrs—does this reader have a point? If you’ve got a particularly thoughtful reply to her, we might just reblog your response… so get crackin’!

“If you’ve never actually attended the Oscars (and I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that a few of you haven’t), there are some things that might surprise you about them — at least, as a first-time attendee, there were things that surprised me. For one, the Kodak Theatre is inside of a mall, so when you’re walking down that last stretch of red carpet towards that glamorous staircase, you’re actually walking past a sunglasses shop, shoe store, coffee place, fudge shop, etc. (They cover the store fronts with red drapes to hide the mall-ness.) Also, on your way to the venue, you have to run a gauntlet of anti-Hollywood protesters holding signs bearing slogans like “Ask Me Why You Deserve Hell” and “The Wages of Sin is Death.” Festive! And while it looks on TV like the Oscar audience is wall-to-wall celebrities, in fact, the vast majority of people who attend the Oscars are random and decidedly un-famous people, trying to act blase in their fancy duds even though they’re actually just as excited to get a glimpse of the movie stars as everyone else. People like … well, me.” —Josh Rottenberg reports on what attending the Oscars is really like—and what happened at the show that we didn’t see at home.

James Van Der Beek talks Ke-dollar-sigh-ha, killing unicorns, and playing himself → popwatch.ew.com

You’ve been playing yourself quite a bit lately. What’s your method for becoming James Van Der Beek?
It starts with hours of preparation. [Laughs] It’s just one of those things that started happening. It wasn’t really by design, necessarily. You’re kind of lucky enough when you’re part of something that hits or catches on in popular culture, and all of a sudden people are asking you to play “You.” I try not to take myself too seriously. Maybe I’m the only idiot who gets these things suggested to him.

On this TV pilot [Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23], it’s one of the writers from American Dad, and one of the producers from How I Met Your Mother and Family Guy, and the director from Modern Family, just a great group of people. They said, “We could have you play an actor who’s [the main character’s] friend, but if you play yourself, then we get to make Dawson’s Creek jokes.” And I thought, “Well, that could be fun.”

What’s your role in the pilot? What level of yourself is appearing in the show?
I called the writer and said, “Listen, don’t be worried about insulting me at all. Let’s just go for whatever’s funniest.” It’s kind of wide open. We’re still re-writing it. And when I say “we,” I mean “she.” I’m the main character’s best friend. We had a relationship before, but it didn’t work out for reasons which you’ll see in the pilot. So now she calls me her “straight gay best friend.” I’ll be single in New York, using the fact that I was once a teen idol to get laid. In real life, I’m happily married and I just had a baby.

So you’re living vicariously through yourself right now.
I think you just blew my mind.

“

Sheen’s father, Martin, has had a long past with the Catholic Church and in particular a friendship with Dorothy Day, a self-proclaimed religious anarchist in the service of peace. We cannot know the pain that Charlie Sheen’s father and the rest of his family are going through right now with Charlie, who has chosen an anarchy of another sort: a radical alienation from the culture immediately around him.

My sense is that Charlie Sheen isn’t fully himself right now; to say he’s in denial is putting it in a way he’d object to, well, violently. But rather than reduce him to this week’s joke or demon, a decent alternative might be to try looking at him as someone who requires some compassion.

MTV is launching the "OMAs," a digital music awards show → music-mix.ew.com

What does the “O” stand for? Good question — MTV is purposefully leaving that up for interpretation. Here’s what we do know: The inaugural O Music Awards will take place April 28. Their purpose is to “honor the migration of music to the digital space, and celebrate the art, artistry, and technology of digital music” through an nontraditional awards show that will be heavily interactive, incorporating television, social media, and mobile technology. The network will soon announce a hub for the show, as well as what its categories will be; Billboard speculates that they may include “things like best app and best Kanye West tweet.”

“Two leap to mind. Sally Field’s “You like me, you really like me!” speech was just such a jaw-dropper, because it truly was that rare peek behind the curtain of Oscar vanity and vulnerability. It defined the ceremony’s subtext forever. And I guess I’d add the joyful insanity of Jack Palance doing his one-armed victory pushups. The fun, and glory, and whole paradox of the Academy Awards is that they’re this lavishly orchestrated spectacle, with the stars on their best behavior, and on some level we spend the whole evening waiting for one of those accidental, uncensored, thrilling and embarrassing, king-of-the-world moments.” —Every week, Time Inc. does a short interview with a notable employee and sends it to everyone on staff.
